In September 2023, the Wall Street Journal reported that Reid Hoffman visited Jeffrey Epstein's private island, Little St. James, in 2014. DOJ corpus documents now confirm the exact dates and logistics:
EFTA02097502 (September 19, 2014) — Flight weight manifest sent to pilot:
"Hi Larry. Re the Joi Ito and Reid Hoffman trip Nov 28th to the island. Reid is 300 lbs and he will have a bag weighing 50lbs. Joi Ito is 155lbs. JE is like 190? I know at least these 3 and luggage will be on the Heli to the island. All ok? And if there are Celina, Eva, Karyna along that would be ok?"
EFTA02097881 (September 16, 2014) — Sapieva logistics email:
"Let me check on flight options for Reid from SFO to the island on 11/28 and then to Boston on 11/30"
EFTA02098286 — Joi Ito's assistant Mika Tanaka confirming logistics: "Re: Trip to the Island - Nov 28-30 Logistics."
The visit is confirmed for November 28–30, 2014, with Hoffman flying from SFO, then continuing to Boston afterward. Additional passengers included "Celina, Eva, Karyna" — Epstein associates.
Documents indicate that Hoffman planned another visit to Epstein's properties in December 2014. The email "Jojo or Car Service for Reid Pick Up?" (EFTA02596958, December 2, 2014) documents Epstein's staff arranging Hoffman's transportation to the Manhattan townhouse. EFTA02090639 confirms: "Reid Hoffman will probably spend the night here at 71st on Thurs. Dec. 4th...just giving heads up... He will participate in the Bill Gates breakfast on Fri. Dec. 5th from 8-10am" (see Part 12).
A newly discovered email (EFTA02300375, November 25, 2014) shows Lesley Groff writing to Joi Ito and Reid Hoffman, CC'ing Karyna Shuliak and "St. Thomas": "Reminder..." The inclusion of "St. Thomas" in the recipients/subject and the CC to Karyna Shuliak (an Epstein associate) suggests this was logistics coordination for travel involving Epstein's USVI properties. The timing — one week before the December 2 car service email — indicates a planned late-November/early-December trip sequence.
The Neo4j BONUS query searched for "island" OR "Little St James" OR "LSJ" OR "St. James" combined with "Hoffman" OR "Reid" OR "Ito" in jmail body text. Result: zero hits. This confirms that the island visit is documented through WSJ reporting and Ito's public statement rather than through recoverable email text in the jmail corpus. The island visit planning emails may have been sent through channels outside the seized jmail archive.
WHAT THIS SHOWS AND DOES NOT SHOW: Ito's statement to the WSJ confirms Hoffman visited Little St. James. Planning documents indicate additional visits were contemplated. The December 2014 logistics emails and the November 2014 reminder to both Ito and Hoffman CC'ing Karyna Shuliak are consistent with coordinated travel. It does NOT establish what occurred during the island visit. Hoffman has stated the visit was for MIT fundraising at Ito's request. No criminal allegations have been made regarding Hoffman's island visit.
