On December 14, 2011, literary agent and Edge Foundation founder John Brockman sent the Edge Annual Question 2012 invitation (EFTA02548313) to a distribution list that included: Paul Allen, Jeff Bezos, Sergey Brin, Hubert Burda, Steve Case, John Doerr, Jeffrey Epstein, Tony Fadell, Bill Gates, W. Daniel Hillis, and dozens of other luminaries. Reid Hoffman appears on this distribution list. The same day, Epstein replied to Brockman (EFTA02364089): "Mathematics ideals" — indicating his engagement with the intellectual content.
DugganUSA campaign D7 returned 6 documents matching "John Brockman + Hoffman" and 107 matching "Edge + dinner." The 6 Brockman–Hoffman documents include the December 2011 Edge invitation, the July 2015 Baumé dinner RSVP, and the March 2014 Vancouver schedule — suggesting Brockman served as a recurring convening node connecting Hoffman and Epstein.
One of the v1.0 open questions was the identity of the "Deception" project referenced in the August 26, 2013 jmail: "Skype call re Deception with Joi, Kevin and Reid" (jmail-efta02573417).
The v2.0 deep dive (Neo4j H9c, DugganUSA D10) reveals Deception was an academic research project involving:
| Participant | Identified From | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Jeffrey Epstein | jmail-efta02573417 | Aug 26, 2013 |
| Joi Ito | jmail-efta02573417 | Aug 26, 2013 |
| "Kevin" (unidentified) | jmail-efta02573417 | Aug 26, 2013 |
| Reid Hoffman | jmail-efta02573417 | Aug 26, 2013 |
| Ed Boyden | EFTA02518968, EFTA01937886 | Feb 4 & 9, 2014 |
| Judith Donath | EFTA01937886 | Feb 9, 2014 |
| Neil Gershenfeld | EFTA01937886 | Feb 9, 2014 |
| "Sebastian" (unidentified) | EFTA01937886 | Feb 9, 2014 |
| "Seung" (likely Sebastian Seung, Princeton neuroscientist) | EFTA01937886 | Feb 9, 2014 |
The February 9, 2014 email (EFTA01937886) reads: "If we can't align schedules, go ahead on the 2..." — indicating active scheduling for a group research session. Ed Boyden separately emailed Epstein on February 4, 2014 (EFTA02518968): "Hope you're feeling better soon. Will reply with my 2/24 schedule later tonight" — referencing "deception" in the subject line and confirming continued project activity into 2014.
DugganUSA returned 70 total hits for "Deception" (many unrelated to the project), 8 hits for "Deception + Reid/Hoffman," and 1 hit for "Deception + Skype" — the original scheduling email. The participants (Judith Donath, Neil Gershenfeld, Ed Boyden, Sebastian Seung) are MIT Media Lab and neuroscience researchers, confirming Deception as an intellectual/scientific collaboration convened by Epstein. The Neo4j 2-hop analysis (H3b) confirmed "Deception" as a CO_APPEARED_WITH node connected through Epstein.
HOUSE_OVERSIGHT_017060 documents Hoffman as a WEF Davos 2011 attendee alongside Epstein, Bill Gates, and Bill Clinton. The Neo4j graph records Hoffman's TRAVELED_TO Davos and CO_APPEARED_WITH "World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2011." However, DugganUSA campaign D7 returned zero hits for both "Davos + Hoffman" and "WEF + Hoffman" — indicating the Davos connection comes exclusively from the House Oversight documents rather than personal email correspondence.
The Edge dinners, the Deception project, and the Davos co-attendance reveal a pattern: Epstein embedded himself in intellectual and scientific convening circuits that naturally included Hoffman and other tech figures. These venues — Edge Foundation events, MIT-affiliated research projects, WEF panels — provided plausible, high-prestige contexts for sustained contact.
WHAT THIS SHOWS AND DOES NOT SHOW: The Deception project was an academic research collaboration with MIT-affiliated scientists. The Edge Annual Question invitation placed Hoffman on the same distribution list as Epstein, Gates, and dozens of other tech/science figures. WEF Davos 2011 co-attendance is documented in House Oversight files. It does NOT establish that these intellectual contexts served any purpose beyond legitimate research and networking. The academic participants are established researchers at major institutions.
