DOJ document EFTA02596743 contains Epstein's email to Hoffman (December 2, 2014 11:04 AM):
"lesley will cooridante. . coinbase is closing c round. this week? should i play? how hard?"
EFTA02597021 contains Hoffman's reply (December 2, 2014 12:52 PM):
"I don't know that much internal on coinbase; I probably wouldn't play but I may not be up-to-date on interesting internal news."
A January 26, 2018 follow-up (EFTA02535164) shows Epstein revisiting the topic: "any idea about coinbase. current valuation? future?" — demonstrating the advisory relationship persisted over three years.
Despite Hoffman's negative assessment, Epstein invested approximately $3 million in Coinbase through Brock Pierce and Blockchain Capital. CoinDesk and Yahoo Finance confirmed the investment details.
The Coinbase exchange adds a new dimension to the financial advisory pattern documented in Part 10. While Part 10 shows Epstein advising Hoffman (bitcoin tax, LinkedIn-Microsoft tax), the Coinbase episode shows Hoffman advising Epstein — making the advisory relationship bidirectional:
| Date | Topic | Direction | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mar 2014 | Bitcoin IRS ruling | Hoffman → Epstein (shared news) | Epstein offered tax analysis |
| Dec 2014 | Coinbase investment | Epstein asked Hoffman | Hoffman: "wouldn't play"; Epstein invested $3M anyway |
| Jun 2016 | LinkedIn-Microsoft tax | Epstein → Hoffman (unsolicited) | Tax minimization advice |
The Coinbase advisory places Hoffman at the intersection of Epstein's cryptocurrency investment ambitions. Epstein's $3M Coinbase investment through Blockchain Capital (Brock Pierce) demonstrates that Epstein was actively using tech-industry connections to access pre-IPO investment opportunities — with Hoffman serving as one advisor among several.
WHAT THIS SHOWS AND DOES NOT SHOW: Hoffman provided investment advice to Epstein about Coinbase, advising against it. This establishes a bidirectional financial advisory relationship — Hoffman advising Epstein on crypto investments, Epstein advising Hoffman on tax strategy. It does NOT establish that Hoffman facilitated the investment, profited from it, or had any financial relationship with Coinbase through Epstein. Hoffman explicitly advised against the investment.
