GRADE A1/B -- OCME autopsy, family pathologist, FBI forensic reports
The OCME officially concluded cause of death was hanging, manner of death was suicide (EFTA00024007, August 16, 2019). The full autopsy report (doj-ogr-00026822) documents: fractures of bilateral thyroid cartilage cornuae AND left hyoid cornua, abrasions of left forearm, cutaneous contusions of wrists. The preliminary autopsy briefing (EFTA00147006) noted: ligature marks around neck, petechial hemorrhage in eyes, fractured hyoid bone, deep tissue bleeding to left shoulder/scapula area. Dr. Roman initially declined to provide cause and manner of death pending additional studies.
Jeffrey Epstein's brother Mark Epstein, through attorney Stacey Richman, documented multiple objections (September 22, 2021):
Forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden, hired by Mark Epstein, stated publicly that Epstein may have been murdered (EFTA00161079, NYT Oct 30, 2019). SDNY prosecutors responded internally: "Obviously we can't officially comment but we are confident it's bunk -- this guy is pretty cont[roversial]" (EFTA00089020).
On August 13, 2019, investigators discussed whether to take the original ligature from July 23 into evidence for comparison with the August 10 ligature. The response: "I don't think there's a harm in taking it into evidence, but don't think it's necessary" (EFTA00013194). A photograph of the July 23 homemade rope exists (EFTA00035736).
BOP death report (EFTA00040939): 66-year-old white male. Health problems: hypertension, hyperlipidemia, sleep apnea, pre-diabetes, constipation. Insulin expired 8/7/19. Mental Health Care Level: 1. No psychotropic medications. Cause of Death: Suicide (Hanging).
WHAT THIS SHOWS AND DOES NOT SHOW: The fractured hyoid bone, while more commonly associated with manual strangulation in older adults, was deemed officially consistent with hanging. Mark Epstein's documented objections -- groove inconsistency, abrasion direction, wrist bruises, dead 2-6 hours when found -- are sourced from correspondence with his attorney and have not been independently adjudicated. The OIG deposed the NYC Medical Examiner under oath on May 31, 2022 (EFTA00113054), but those depositions appear in multiple OIG case 2019-010614 records.
